Stem Cell Technology for Refractory Crohn’s
Refractory Crohn’s
What is Crohn's Disease?
-
Life-long chronic inflammation of the gut
-
A persistent and incurable condition, affecting more than 2 million people globally
-
Has a chronic relapsing and remitting course, sometimes life-threatening
-
Considered an auto-immune disorder, affecting all age groups, with incidence peaking in early adulthood
-
Commonly results in perianal fistulas (sores that can cause abnormal tracts between the anal canal and skin near the anus, leading to pain, swelling, and several other complications)

Crohn’s disease can affect the total length of the GI tract

Fistulas can develop between the anal canal and the skin near the anus
Refractory Crohn’s (Life-Threatening)
-
Unresponsive to conventional therapies (Antibiotics/Steroids/Biologics)
-
Surgery often becomes the only remaining option
-
~30% of patients become refractory – resistant and no longer responding to standard therapies
Fistulas
-
Sores or ulcers that can create abnormal passageways from the intestine to other organs or to the outside surface of the body (including the area surrounding the anus)
-
About 30% of Crohn’s patients will develop fistulas
-
Unresolved chronic inflammation
